Dear Boulder Fly Casters,

We write to you as Colorado College students, avid anglers, and most importantly on behalf of theColorado College Fly Fishing Club as founding members. Our interest is to inquire whether your chapter can help support our club.

Surprisingly, upon our arrival at CC in fall 2010, there was no fly-fishing club on campus and anglers had a very minimal presence. In the spring of 2011, we founded the Colorado College fly-fishing club. The club was originally a place for anglers to come together and share their passion for the sport, but it soon transformed. Today, we strive to instill a sense of respect, humility, and stewardship in our members for our waters and fisheries. We aim to attract, educate, and unite Colorado College anglers, experienced and new, under the veil of our club to exchange knowledge and experiences around our love of fly-fishing.

This has come to be through various projects and events. We put on a successful film premier in collaboration with the Green Back of Denver, held multiple fly-tying clinics in conjunction with the Cheyenne Mountain Chapter of Trout Unlimited, as well as a handful of successful trips on the river, both fishing and service oriented. Some of our more experienced members and leaders of the club took home 1^st and 3^rd place at the CTU 5 Rivers Rendezvous tournament last year on the Yampa in Steamboat last year and two weekends ago we defended our title, but we want to do more! We are also in the process of running a crowd funding campaign through Worthwild.com (you can find the link below) to allow us to create an endowment for our club, which is where we hope you can help. You’ll find the link to our crowd funding campaign below and would truly appreciate it if you can pass the link and our note on to members of your chapter. We’re more than halfway there and have 10 days to meet our goal!

Through this, we can make our plans for the coming year a reality! We hope to work with CTU, Project Healing Waters, and most importantly, get new anglers on the river! We strive to be a club known for its eagerness to give back, to educate, and attract new addicts to the sport. We hope you can help!

On Thursday, the Colorado Senate Agriculture and and Natural Resources Committee will have a hearing at 1:30 in the afternoon regarding SB 232. This bill intends to study the transfer of federal lands to the State of Colorado. This is a cookie cutter concept being pushed across the west that would rather see the lands open for exploitation and have much less scrutiny over any potential development activities. The net would be less access (see CO State Land Board Land where only 18% are open to the public and CPW uses sportsmen’s dollars to lease many other state lands. The dollars could be better used for habitat improvement and additional access) and more development on these lands. Further, the State simply does not have anywhere near the funds to manage Colorado’s 24 million acres of public lands. Please consider joining other TU members, other sportsmen and women, and public lands users to “pack the house” at Thursday’s hearing. HOW TO HELP The Forest service has issued its Draft Record of Decision on Eldora Mountain Resort’s expansion plan and approved everything that Eldora asked for, but the process is not yet complete. If you made comments last year to the Forest Service concerning Eldora’s plan to expand to Middle Boulder Creek to the north and Jenny Creek to the south, or if you commented during the Scoping Period in 2012, then you have legal standing to file an objection with the Forest Service. FILE AN OBJECTION You can file on your own (see sample letter) or co-sign the objection that the Middle Boulder Creek Coalition is filing. You have until May 4 to file on your own. OTHER WAYS YOU CAN HELP DONATE TO MBCC to help pay our environmental consultant who is preparing the formal objection. We may have legal fees as well. Boulder County has considerable leverage in the issue, since Eldora has a Special Use Permit with the County, and would likely need County approval for several key elements in the expansion proposal. President Barack Obama plans to designate the Browns Canyon National Monument in Colorado on Thursday. Browns Canyon is near Salida.

“This designation will provide permanent protection that is long overdue for this incredible area,” Keith Baker, Executive Director of Friends of Browns Canyon, said. “Residents and visitors to Chaffee County have always understood that Browns Canyon is a national treasure. The national monument designation is supported by hunters and anglers, businesses and conservation groups, veterans and youth groups.”

A broad cross-section of local groups and businesses have supported the national monument designation for Browns Canyon, including the Colorado and Arkansas River Outfitters Associations, Chaffee County Visitors Bureau, the Salida Business Alliance, sportsmen, youth, faith, veterans and Hispanic groups, local businesses and county commissioners. Recent polling from the Colorado College showed that 96 percent of Coloradans support the protection and conservation of natural areas. As of right now, Browns Canyon says there “will not be a charge for visitors under national monument status.”

“Browns Canyon is intricately connected to the fabric of our communities and is key to our quality of life,” Joel Benson, Mayor of Buena Vista, said. “The Browns Canyon National Monument will also boost local economic vitality via increased visitation and awareness of Buena Vista and Chaffee County. As a father and a business owner, I welcome this monument designation because it ensures that this irreplaceable location will be permanently protected for the well-being of our community, our local economy, and our children.”
