Fishing Rocky Mountain National Park — BFC Chapter Meeting

Date: March 2
Time: 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Venue: Upslope Brewery Tasting Room
1898 S Flatiron Ct.
Boulder, CO 80302

Learn about fishing in RMNP from local guide/expert Kirk Bien of Kirk’s Flyshop located in Estes Park Colorado

kirks-big-t-fishKirk Bien has been fly fishing for 20 years, and guiding for 12 years. His favorite places to fly fish are Rocky Mountain National Park, specifically Forest Canyon and the Big Thompson River below Lake Estes. Kirk also guides backpacking and llama pack trips.

Rocky Mountain National Park is a protected area where fly fishing activities are balanced with efforts to restore and perpetuate natural aquatic environments and life. Populations of at least four species of trout exist in the park – brown, brook, rainbow, and cutthroat. RMNP, headwaters for the Colorado, Big Thompson, Cache la Poudre, and Fall Rivers, provides high country stream and lake fishing. Fishing opportunities in the RMNP range from high country catch and release fly fishing to big lake fishing to wintertime ice fishing. Kirks

Boulder Flycasters Chapter Meeting: Colorado Mine Reclamation and our Fisheries

Wednesday, February 3, 2016
6:45 PM
Upslope Brewery – Flatirons
1898 S Flatiron Ct, Boulder , CO

“Abandoned mines are one of the most obvious—but least-addressed—threats to wild and native trout in West. By some estimates, 40 percent of our western headwater streams are affected by tailings piles and leaky tunnels that belch heavy metals and acidic water into otherwise pristine streams. And these headwater streams often feed some of our country’s most iconic trout rivers.” Trout Unlimited National [http://www.tu.org/conservation/program-listing/western-abandoned-mines]Untitled

Given the importance of mine reclamation to improving water quality, Boulder Flycasters is pleased to have one of the state’s leading mine reclamation experts join us at our meeting on February 3. Bruce Stover will discuss “Reclamation of water quality impairments at abandoned hardrock mine sites in Colorado”.

Mr. Stover is currently the Director of the Office of Active and Inactive Mines, within the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, Safety in Denver, Colorado, and Manages the Colorado Inactive Mine Reclamation Program. He has 30 years of experience as a project manager in surface and underground mine construction, closure, and reclamation projects.

Next Wednesday 12/2, 6:30 pm @ Upslope Brewing (1898 S Flatiron Ct, Boulder)
This was rescheduled from earlier in November.

Every year we have an annual membership meeting as required by the Boulder Flycasters Bylaws. This year we will vote for new members of the BFC Board of Directors. There will also be a quick update on the Chapters successes over the past year, update on current projects, and goals for upcoming years.

Bob AdwarIn addition, we will have very interesting and informative talk by Bob Adwar. Over the last 13 years Bob Adwar has helped organize more than 100 outdoor adventures including Pheasant Hunts, Duck Hunts, Big Game Hunts and Fly Fishing outings for wounded war veterans and those with traumatic brain injuries. He began his involvement working with patients and alumni at Craig Hospital, one of the best in the country for treating Spinal Cord and TBI injuries. During his service on the Board of Directors for Safari Club International, he expanded to work with wounded veterans through Operation TBI (traumatic brain injury), Project Wounded Ego and Freedom Hunters. In the past he worked with such organizations as the James Beckworth Society which takes inner city kids out into nature. Come join Bob as he lets us know about Denver Safari Club International’s great ongoing work!

Gordon Wickstrom Commemorative Bench Dedication

Sunday September 27, 2015

2:00pm

Boulder Flycasters Memorial Park: Located 2.8 miles from the mouth of Boulder Canyon (one mile west of the Four Mile Canyon intersection).

Boulder Flycasters has purchased and installed a commemorative bench to honor Gordon Wickstrom for his long time contribution to Boulder Flycasters.  Gordon passed away September 18, 2014 and we have been working on a way to remember him and his contribution over the years.
Boulder Flycasters board agreed that he should be honored in a lasting way by placing a Gordon Wickstrom bench at our BFC Memorial Park, which is located 2.8 miles from the mouth of Boulder Canyon, next to Gordon’s beloved Boulder Creek.

As an added note:  When the Flycasters built the park, Gordon spoke at the dedication.

Members and friends of Boulder Flycasters and Gordon will gather there on Sunday, September 27th at 2:00 p.m.
We have invited Gordon’s wife, Betty, and her family to the dedication.
We hope to have a great turnout to remember Gordon.

(The Bronco Game is that evening, so no one will miss the action!)

Boulder Creek Cleanup Community Event

September 20 @ 9:00 am3:00 pm

FRA clean up

After a wonderful summer that saw thousands of people enjoying time in Boulder Canyon, we have noticed that many areas along Boulder Creek in the canyon are unfortunately full of trash. Join Front Range Anglers, Boulder County Parks & Open Space and other community members for a trash clean-up day to bring the canyon back to the beautiful place that we all love to spend time in.

Registration and check-in will begin at 9 a.m. at Front Range Anglers (2344 Pearl St.) and after car-pooling into the canyon, clean-up will begin at 10 a.m. We’ll wrap up the day back at the shop at 1 p.m. with a BBQ event!  With the water at its current low level, you are welcome to bring the whole family out to help. We’ll provide all the trash bags, but we recommend you bring your own gloves and wear clothes that you’re prepared to get dirty. Water levels don’t require waders, but you’re welcome to wear yours if you like. We do recommend wearing some type of footwear that can get wet and has good traction though (either your fishing boots, or river shoes).
