Someone once said "the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome". Well, my paraphrase is probably a little off but the parallel meaning for our Flycasters chapter has been very evident. Poorly attended monthly meetings, fund raising events, and projects have not met anyone's expectations. We have been reinvigorated to break the mundane cycle and start anew. As I stated in an article in the January Newsletter entitled "Looking Back at 2008 & New Horizons for 2009", we are focusing our efforts towards watershed stewardship and youth education.
So what do we mean by new horizons? It means we are not going to have regularly scheduled fishing programs at a single venue. This spring, we will be scheduling a dinner meeting at a local restaurant. We will reserve a private dining area and have a more intimate social setting for meeting fellow fly-fisherman and getting to know each other better. Many members have commented how our monthly meetings were cold and uninviting. Hopefully, a less formal presentation and dinner will break the ice and create more friendships. Stay tuned for more details for a late March or early April Flycasters dinner night.
Although we have sponsored club fishing trips in the past, we have not pursued a private water experience. A private Boulder Flycasters Anglers Day is being planned for April 25th at Sylvan Dale Ranch. Sylvan Dale has trophy trout lakes in the Big Thompson Valley which are home to rainbows, Donaldson steelhead, and browns. Trout range from 15 to 30 inches (up to 12 pounds).
The Big Thompson River flows through the heart of the ranch with rainbows and browns averaging 13 inches, some up to 25 inches! The cost of the day of fishing and lunch will be moderately priced for BFC members and limited to 20 Anglers who will have access to the entire facility. Registered members (those who have paid their dues will receive first preference and spots will go on a first come first serve basis).
We are kicking off our youth education programs this year with an exciting Youth Fly-fishing Day with the Boulder Valley YMCA. The YMCA builds strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.
More than 30,000 youth, families and adults from all walks of life are served annually by the YMCA of Boulder Valley, positively impacting the communities of Boulder, Broomfield, Erie, Jamestown, Lafayette, Louisville, Nederland, Niwot and Superior. Saturday, March 7th, we will be hosting a Youth Fly-fishing Day for Boulder County kids at the Arapahoe YMCA (Corner of Arapahoe Road & 95th Street). Volunteers will lead students through clinic stations teaching fly tying, entomology, fly fishing equipment, local fishing destinations, rivers conservation, fish habitat, and casting. We are excited to forge a lasting partnership with the BV YMCA and many more youth programs.

Wanted, BFC Bloggers! How will we keep everyone informed about these new programs? Visit the new Boulder Flycaster's blog site! The site has been created to keep our registered members advised on a daily basis of activities surrounding the Boulder Flycasters. It is far more than a newsletter. It's daily information about fly fishing and watershed conservation, invitations to participate in special events, opportunities to buy discounted equipment and much more! (Be sure to click on a subscription located on the right hand side so you will be alerted to the latest news.)
To encourage you to visit the blog site and subscribe for regular updates, all new subscribers will be entered in a drawing to receive a shadow box containing Colorado Flies tied by Bob Bush and one dozen flies (tied by Larry Quilling) for fishing Boulder Creek. The drawing will be held at the end of this month (February) so don't hesitate to subscribe today!
New materials are being added everyday so don't delay . . . Click on the Blog link below for a subscription to the BFC Blog!
We hope that our new programs and approaches will encourage greater participation and build new horizons for Boulder Flycasters and our community.
