FIRST CAST ARTICLE by Larry Quilling
Boulder Flycasters 2009/2010 Board of Directors & Committees
Before we know it our summer will fade and fall will arrive. Some could argue that summer has yet to arrive this year but "time & tide wait for no man". I already am surprised to find my fishing day cut short by the setting sun that takes minutes from me every day. With the fall comes our chapter's transition into our next fiscal year beginning in November. In preparation for the new year, we need to assess the needs of our chapter and ask for volunteers who would like to serve as board members and committee participants. Detailed below is a review of our chapter offices and committees, who is willing to serve for next year and where we need your help:
2009/2010 BFC Board & Committees
I have been speaking with current and potential Board Members for next year's officers and board positions. Interests I have discovered are as follows:
1) President: Larry Quilling, I am interested in serving as BFC President for the 2009/2010 year. I do not intend to be president again the following year but plan to continue to serve on the board or another officer position the following year.
2) Vice President: Currently open.
3) Membership: Dave Clark has agreed to serve as Membership Chair again in 2009/2010.
4) Secretary: Allen Nakagawa will not seek re-election for 2009/2010. Sandy Platter has volunteered to serve for 2009/2010.
5) Treasurer: Mark Riley will not seek re-election for 2009/2010 but still wishes to serve on the board. We are actively seeking a treasurer, possibly a CU grad student, (consulting with Jerry Madigan). Anyone interested in serving as treasurer please contact Mark or me for details. Mark succeeded me as treasurer in 2005; we need to thank Mark for all of his BFC dedication and ask for someone to step forward and serve as our new treasurer in 2009/2010.
6) Programs: Currently covered by Dave Clark. Thom Curtis was nominated and elected interim program chair for the rest of the 2008/09 term at the last board meeting. Thom has volunteered for the same position in 2009/2010.
7) Projects: Paul Prentiss, Chair, Paul plans to coordinate project activities between committees for 2009/2010.
8) Chapter Communications: Our newsletter has been managed by Bob Bush, member at large. And Tony Fernandez continues to maintain the website. We will be consolidating all chapter communications under one board member and committee for 2009/2010. (newsletter, e-mail blasts, website, blog) Please consider volunteering your expertise and leadership for this important position.
9) Members-at-large: Bob Bush, Chad Pettrone, Mark Riley & Ken Iwamasa have all expressed desire to be board members. Other volunteers are encouraged to join the board as members-at-large where they can learn the functions of our chapter organization and participate as they find their interests.
2009/2010 BFC Committees
1) Rogers Park, Roger Svendsen Chair. Committee members: Michael Stein, Allen Nakagawa, Dave Stine. More volunteers are needed to plan the Rogers Park Educational Interpretive Signage Project.
2) South Boulder Creek, Don Damico Chair. Committee members: John Garnett, Nate Nazzaro, Andy Schwarz, Stan South, Chad Pettrone, Jon Zemmelman. Over $250k in grants and matching funds have been received for South Boulder Creek projects slated to be implemented within the next eighteen months. Don has as many as five South Boulder Creek projects in mind and additional volunteers are needed.
3) Youth Programs, Shawn Bratt Chair. Committee members: Larry Quilling and other BFC board members.
BFC participated and sponsored Youth Education and Fishing programs this year that reached nearly 1,000 kids. There is no greater reward, in my opinion, than working with kids. Please volunteer to be on our committee for 2009/2010.
4) Boulder Watershed Mapping, Ken Isawama Chair. Committee members: John Garnett, Bob Bush, Michael Signorella, Andy Schwartz, Dave Clark, and other board members. Ken and the mapping team are making great progress towards a Boulder Watershed Angling Map after just three short months. Please consider joining Ken's team for 2009/2010 as they collect angling information for their project.
5) Other 2009/2010 Committee Possibilities include a Seniors Fly-fishing program; collaboration with Casting for Recovery, an organization dedicated to fly-fishing as recovery for women recovering from breast cancer.
"The ultimate expression of generosity is not in giving of what you have, but in giving of who you are."
Johnnetta B. Cole
Please consider volunteering to serve our chapter this coming year as a chapter officer, board member or as a committee member. Good friendships and rewarding experiences await you.
Thank you,
Larry Quilling,
Boulder Flycasters President

WE DID IT . . . ROGERS PARK
THE RIGHT PROJECT FOR THE RIGHT TIME!
(Photo's above were taken prior to the re-vegetation work done in July)
Thank you to all who participated in the Rogers Park Re-vegetation Project Saturday July 18th. The successful planting day brought to a close the in-stream improvements envisioned over three years ago for this beautiful stretch of Boulder Creek. Public interest and visits to the area have been steadily increasing since we finished the heavy equipment work and plantings. Fish were seen to have moved up into the new habitat just 48 hours after the trucks and equipment left the stream bed.
None of this would have been possible without dedication and support of so many volunteers, contributors and professionals. Rogers Parks is a pinnacle of pride and success for Boulder Flycasters, the Colorado Division of Wildlife, Boulder County, the Colorado Division of Transportation, the Colorado Water Conservation Board, the Salmon & Trout Foundation, Environmental Resource Consultants, McGuckins, Colorado Trout Unlimited and the Boulder Community. All these organizations and individuals deserve all the credit for a job well done.
I wish to personally thank Roger Svendsen who led the project and his project team who worked tirelessly to recreate Rogers Park. Many thanks to Michael Stein who authored our many grant applications bringing unprecedented success to our chapter in grant awards. Thank you to the BFC board members and other volunteers who have sat around Roger's dining room table the past three years planning the project.
Thank you everyone who had faith in our team and project to donate your time and money. There are so many individuals and BFC members who gave much needed cash and gift contributions to match our grant monies. We are truly thankful for your donations and hope you all share the pride and satisfaction we have for our achievements.
This was the right project at the right time for our chapter and community. Many new alliances, friendships, and new members have come together because of Rogers Park.
"Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in. Its thin current slides away, but eternity remains."
~by Henry David Thoreau~
I feel the project was summarized best by Michelle Rodriguez, a CSU student from Highlands Ranch and Rogers Park volunteer who said: It's something that will last and not disappear, it makes me want to plant all over the world.....I feel so good about this".
Congratulations everyone,
Larry Quilling
Boulder Flycasters President

| Celebration Dinner for the Rogers Park Project

Jimmy & Drew's 28th Street Deli will be the location for our celebration on September 3rd, 2009
Come join us for an evening celebrating the successful completion of the Middle Boulder Creek stream
enhancement project at Platt Rogers Memorial Park. This project was conceived and executed by
the Boulder Flycasters, the local Trout Unlimited Chapter, with the active help and support of the City &
County of Boulder, the Colorado Department of Transportation, the Sportfish Restoration Act (Fishing is Fun),
the Colorado Water Restoration Board, and many individual contributors and volunteers.
We returned the stream to a more natural state improving the fish habitat and riparian environment.
As a result, Boulder County has a new urban recreation opportunity for the general public. The project
has been very successful, so come join us to celebrate! There will be door prizes and a silent auction adding
to the festivities as well. Let's have some fun!!

Al Permut, Owner/Broker of Boulder Valley Realty Helping BFC!
Help for Boulder Flycasters
Support the Boulder Creek Enhancement Project When You Buy or Sell A Home (or even if you know someone who is planning to buy or sell). And save yourself hundreds of dollars in the process.
Al Permut, broker/owner of Boulder Valley Realty, will donate directly to the Rogers Park Project $50 for every referral of someone planning to buy or sell a home within the next 6 months or so.
Al will also donate 10% of his commission from every transaction resulting from this promotion.
It's really simple. Here's how it works:
Contact Al, have a friend contact Al or get permission for Al to contact them. Be sure to mention this offer. Even if outside the Metro area or Colorado, Al can set up a referral to another well qualified Realtor. When this results in a referral fee, Al will donate 10% to the project.
Al Permut is a long time member, past president and served for many years on the Board of Directors of Boulder Flycasters. He is excited to be able to directly support this worthwhile project with a little help from you.
During the Planting Day, July 18th, Al made a donation of $1,593.00 to the Roger's Park Project. Thanks, Al, for making this happen!

| BFC Calendar Events Listing for Summer, 2009
ROGERS PARK CELEBRATION - Jimmy & Drew's 28th Street Deli on September 3rd.
Come help us celebrate the completion of our project.
CTU 40th Anniversary Celebration Bash at the "D" Note in Golden August 28th.
August/September, 2009. Left Hand Reservoir, August/September time frame (once the weather shapes up). Four wheeling, bring your belly boat, trek into the backcountry (no hiking, though), near the Continental Divide, for native Cutthroats and Brook Trout in a beautiful setting. Lead by Bob Bush.
(Note: Because of the weird weather in July and the everyday occurrence of thunder and lightening, I've been waiting for a return to normalcy in the weather before I lead the trek to the lake. Stay tuned for an update in late August.)
There will be more information on the BFC Blog! Check it often!
General Meeting: None Scheduled.
