October MEETING - Wednesday, October 1st - Jay Zimmerman, Going for Carp!

Hey . . . here's your chance to go after some Colorado Bone Fish right here in your back yard!

1 hour instructional slide show geared toward the fly fisherman who wants to break into carp fishing...or wants to improve by learning some local tips. We will talk about common and grass carp, areas in Boulder County to find them, strategy, flies...and maybe have a good laugh at ourselves! The presentation will be packed with information, but will be a lot of fun. If you attend I promise you will be motivated to get after some carp!

Jay, you'll see most days, when he's not prowling around the flats of some warm water lake along the front range, working at Front Range Anglers where he actually makes wages doing something he loves!

As Dorothy would say - "THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME"!

ImageFIRST CAST ARTICLE by Larry Quilling

I don't know how many times I have seen the Wizard of Oz and heard those words from Dorothy, the meek & small from Kansas. I have to admit, I am somewhat of a homebody. I have not been fly fishing in any exotic far away destinations. I have to make an exception for one brief experience in Singapore when I was an expatriate there in the late 80's. Believe me; you will never see anyone pushing the fly fishing experience in the Singapore River. I did it because I could and my antics attracted a quite a curious crowd near the Merlion statue. I must admit however, this urban fishing adventure had me afraid of falling in and contracting any number of tropical diseases. By the time I landed a 6 inch fish that I could not identify, I had a crowd of nearly a hundred spectators cheering and laughing. There were video cameras in the crowd and I have been worried in recent years that I might someday become a celebrity on YouTube.

Although I have traveled throughout the West and fished many western waters, fishing close to home gives me great comfort. This summer and spring I have fished my favorite sections of South Boulder and Boulder Creeks, Viele Lake, Hayden Lake, gravel pit #3, Bear Creek, Thomas Reservoir, LeftHand Creek, and other locations I have probably forgotten already. Most of these trips this year have been on my mountain bike which has helped me lose 115 lbs. Aside from the physical health benefits I have experienced, I've been blessed with local fishing and nature events I would expect to only see in far away destinations. In August, I shared a fishing hole on South Boulder Creek with a river otter. I felt very fortunate to stand across the creek watching him dip and preen himself while I casted upstream. Yesterday, I startled a golden eagle eating a fish on a rock near the old Lafayette water treatment plant. Maybe next week I will be startled by a Buffalo but probably only if Ralphie escapes.

I know I am not alone in my fondness for these places. I have seen more anglers in some of my secret locations this year so I continue to look for more obscure locations. I suspect I can claim to be one of the few anglers to catch trout from Bear Creek on a fly this year. Of course two years ago, I caught a 16 inch rainbow in Goose Creek in front of the Boulder Toyota dealership. My son one evening a few springs ago caught five species of fish from Viele Lake. I once caught an 18 inch rainbow between the two highway bridges at 28th St. while waiting out a late afternoon thunder storm. It is these kinds of memories that lead me to say; there really is no place like home!

What Will It Take To Restore Boulder Creek?

by Larry Quilling.

Sixty years ago, progress and prosperity pushed our creek aside to make room for a road; a road that reduced the travel time to our favorite mountain playgrounds. Few of us are old enough to appreciate the passion and effort that went into imposing our dominion upon Boulder Creek. The road building, water diversions for agriculture, towns and industry, bridges, tunnels and other projects are so common place with today's Herculean technology it is difficult to comprehend the human will required to complete such projects.

Quietly, Boulder Creek endured at the expense of our prosperity. We dammed its headwaters, diverted, channeled and controlled its raging wild tendencies. As we tamed the creek, we began to exploit our newly acquired access to shameful excesses. Little did we appreciate the effects of our actions but somehow Boulder Creek has endured. Very few of us have seen Boulder Creek flow freely through the seasons in all of its natural beauty and magnificence.

Today, we are experiencing a renaissance of connectivity to our environment. I think it started for me when I was in grade school. I was gripped by a television commercial depicting an American Indian shedding tears for a polluted river in the background. I was moved as I believe most of our generation has been to alter our passions from dominion over nature to how we can coexist and leave no foot prints.

What will it take to restore Boulder Creek? How can we remove many of the scars we have imposed, remove our foot prints and yet still enjoy the prosperity it has brought to our community? Our Rogers Park project is one step towards this goal. We desperately need your help to restore this special section of Boulder Creek to its original sinuous splendor. Boulder Flycasters volunteers have embarked upon a restoration project that cannot be completed without the help of our community. Thank you all who attended the Fly-fishing Film Tour at the Dairy Center this past weekend. The event was our way of sharing our passion for enjoyment of Boulder Creek while raising funds in support of the Rogers Park restoration project.

Additional restoration projects are underway for South Boulder Creek as well. I participated in a DOW fish shock survey on South Boulder Creek Thursday, September 18th near the McGinn diversion dam. Fish census was taken above and below the dam in preparation for the fish passage reconstruction effort being planned by the Boulder Parks & Open Space Department later this fall. Boulder Flycasters received a grant from the Salmon & Trout Foundation last year in support of this project and it will be applied to the reconstruction costs.

Our South Boulder Creek Watershed Coalition is working with Ben Swigle from the Division of Wildlife to host a meeting to discuss habitat improvements for South Boulder Creek. Initial habitat surveys have been completed and our efforts will turn towards project planning and a proposal to Denver Water for release of habitat improvement funds escrowed from the last FERC re-licensing negotiations. If anyone is interested in participating please contact me for further information.

Thank you for your continued support for the restoration of our home waters.

Film Tour - "Silent Auction Items" at the Dairy Center

by Bob Bush

We're very excited with the Film Tour and even more excited with the silent auction offerings we've compiled for your auction pleasure. Heading the list of choices are two rod and reel sets consisting of Ross Evolution Reels matched to GLoomis Max GLX, 4 and 6 weight, fly rods.

Details of the Ross Evolution Reels include:
The Evolution is a high end hybrid large arbor fly reel that is a machining masterpiece. The first time you pick up the Evolution you will know right away that this reel defines perfection in every way. This series was designed for those anglers who equally appreciate art and function. The cosmetic innovation and precision workmanship of the Evolution series is only surpassed by its drag system which is precise and sensitive - capable of protecting the lightest tippets even when battling world-class fish. To guarantee the level of dependability consumers have come to expect from all Ross products, we have designed a drag system for the Evolution series that has triple redundancy; providing for three backup drag systems and thereby guaranteeing dependability under the most demanding fishing conditions. The spoke designed frame and extensive spool ventilation make this series incredibly lightweight, yet the Evolution is built to endure a lifetime of flawless performance. Each reel in this series is designed with a specific diameter and width to maximize the properties of drag consistency and quick line retrieval. The Evolution series is truly art in motion, and will satisfy the demands of the most discriminating angler.

Details of the GLoomis rod includes:
Max GLX:
The Max GLX are the result of the need for ultimate speed and control under the most demanding casting and fishing conditions. Ideally suited to casters that demand fast cycle time, these rods have the extra-stiff action and fast taper needed to push streamers to pockets while drifting the river in a raft or drift boat. Also excellent for long line nymphing with split shot and indicator, or to make a tight cast into a stiff wind. When you want to take control no matter the conditions the Max GLX is your rod.

Each rod & reel set are valued at more than $1,000.00 and silent auction bids will begin at $675.00 (a bargain at that price, alone.)

Other items are still being collected, but one trip that bears mentioning is the two days of guided access for two anglers as well as one night accommodations at the riverside cabin on the Grand River Ranch, just below Wolford reservoir, near Kremmling. Several miles of river access and a great lake are included in the trip. The value of this trip is undetermined as it's impossible to get on the water unless you're a member and own property, but I have fished it prior to it being developed recently by the Gallagher family and the fishing, especially dry fly fishing is out of this world . . . big fish and lots of 'em!

We still have a number of BFC hats and shirts available for purchase along with a special selection of wading "Crocs" designed to use in lakes and streams. These unusual shoes offer anglers access to the water without loosing them as with normal Crocs float away from the wearer in fast flowing water! We have a small selection of sizes available and they cannot be purched locally!

Film Tour - "Destinations"

Image
by Bob Bush

"Destinations"
Beattie Outdoor Productions, fishwithra.com
The short film "Destinations" was created solely for the Fly Fishing Film Festival and
is a compilation of three films; Slovenia on the Fly, Bird Chasers and First Descent
Alaska. The film is a whirlwind fly fishing world tour, stopping in Slovenia, Alaska and
North Carolina. The piece begins with a look at the rare Marble Trout and the Hucho,
close relative of the Mongolian Taimen - jumps to the first recorded descent of a river
in Alaska - then finishes with one of the fastest fish on the planet, the False Albacore.
Each section of the film combines stunning images with a strong story line, giving the
viewer fish porn and a narrative...the best of both worlds. While many people travel
the world in search of locations with bigger, easier fish to catch, this film focuses on
destinations that demand more from the fishermen. Caution: this film will make you
want to fish.
