| NOVEMBER MEETING — Wednesday, November 5th - Maurice Blackmon . . . Steelhead and Steelheading!
Hey . . . here's your chance to go after some Steelhead Hogs!
November's program will be "Steelhead and Steelheading" by Maurice Blackmon. Maurice was President of Boulder Flycasters in 1980. In 2001, Maurice made his first trip to the Babine River to fish for steelhead. He has returned every year since. Maurice will discuss what a steelhead is, what its life cycle is and where they are found. He will also discuss his trips to the Babine, which is one of the most famous steelhead rivers, and show some pictures of steelhead that he, and others, have caught.
I've known Maurice for over thirty years and he's a very accomplished angler. I know that you'll come away from this program with a new appreciation for fishing Steelheads!

| A CALL TO ACTION!
FIRST CAST ARTICLE by Larry Quilling
Recent economic events and the political season have many of us preoccupied with what this means to us personally and to our families. No surprise here; regardless of political affiliation, demographic, social or personal economic status we are facing unprecedented changes. When put into historical perspective, our deepest recessions of the dot.com correction in 2002, the oil and credit restructuring of the mid-eighties, and the 1973 oil embargo all resulted in market adjustments of less than 50%. Friday, I watched as the Dow Jones plummeted 300 points and everyone was relieved it did not hit a 500 point pull back. Many of us have watched the value of our retirement savings lose 50% of their value or more in recent weeks without any confidence we have hit bottom.
Pretty depressing news, but why am I writing about economic woes as the topic of my Boulder Flycasters monthly article? The answer is very simple. No non-profit organization is immune to impact of these economic times. Many local employers will most likely be announcing layoffs in the coming months, home sales are slowing, and the overall business climate is tight. Human Services non-profits will be taxed with an influx of demands while also suffering from reduced tax and personal contribution revenue streams. The impact for environmental organizations such as BFC are obvious, our ability to raise money for important local environmental projects will be more difficult.
I believe we have already experienced some of the economic reality this past month with the disappointing results of our Fly-fishing Film Tour. Attendance at the two evening event was less than 100 for a venue that could have accommodated 500. Thanks to the generosity of loyal BFC contributors, our mini-auction and gate receipts netted over $2,000 towards our Rogers Park project. If fully booked our goal was closer to $10,000. The message is clear for our BFC Board; we need to work even harder to close the funding gap for Rogers Park restoration this spring. We need an additional $20,000 within the next 4-6 six months to avoid having to scale back the project.
I now ask all of you to please consider the saying “Think globally, act locally”. Our BFC board and CTU have been discussing ways we can help protect important national and regional causes such as the Roan Plateau and Bristol Bay Alaska. I will not attempt to convince anyone that Rogers Park is more important than these environmental issues. What I can say is your ability to affect positive results for Rogers Park restoration is far greater as a local contributor. In these difficult times I ask that you give what you can to make a direct difference in our home waters. Not unlike other difficult economic times, your support can be best measured by your personal commitment rather than the size of your contribution. If you cannot make a personal contribution, please contact myself or another BFC Board member you know and volunteer to help.
I received an insulting request from another non-profit organization last week asking for $5,000 to secure their volunteers for the re-vegetation of Rogers Park after construction. Your donation to BFC goes 100% towards the Rogers Park project. We have no paid director or staff; no office or even a telephone answering service. Your BFC Board pays for its own meals and beverages for every board event. There are no $400k BFC retreats, expensive wardrobes or other disgusting entitlements. Please consider how your contribution will be spent and applied as part of your donation decision. If each of our over 800 BFC members donated $25 towards Rogers Park, we would meet our goal. Equally important, if one fifth of us volunteered to participate in the re-vegetation of Rogers Park , we would fore go paying another organization $5k to recruit and schedule volunteers.
My call to action is simple; please invest in your local TU organization. The impact will be personal and direct for whatever you can contribute during these difficult times.

| By-Law Changes Requires your Approval!
By Allen Nakagawa, Secretary (photo at left) and Mark Riley, Treasurer.
The Board of Directors has approved changes in the by-laws to decrease the time and effort for making payments on behalf of the chapter while still maintaining the controls embedded within the current by-laws. Payments by the chapter have increased to pay for our fund-raising activities as well as work related to the Boulder Creek Project. Approval of the general membership is necessary for this change to be effective. This will be an item of business for our general meeting on November 5. The changes are described in the following paragraphs for your review. Please contact any Board member if you have any questions.
In summary, the proposed revisions will:
1. Accommodate payment by debit card in addition to handwritten checks
2. Maintain joint approval by President and Treasurer without need to obtain handwritten signatures on checks. Written e-mail approvals of both are required and the Treasurer is responsible for keeping records of such approvals in his files.
The complete details for this proposed change will be handed out at our November General Meeting, where we will be voting on this change.

| Fly Fishing Film Tour Review!

by Bob Bush
I had the opportunity, along with 40 of our close friends, to see the Award Winning Fly Fishing Films: Mongolia "River Wolf"; Tarpon Season; River Poets; Four Seasons of Steelheads; Equilibrum; Fishizzle; Destinations! It was a blast. They were all great films and were very entertaining. Sadly, we didn't have a great turnout for either Friday or Saturday nights. A total of less than 85 attended the combined showings, a very disappointment for all of us who organized the event and worked so hard to make it all happen.
I'm particularly sad that not more of our chapter members showed up. We have a staggering number of members and we had hoped to get at least 20% of our membership to attend (150 would have been more like it with the Dairy Center able to hold 250 per viewing).
I just hope that this doesn't become a trend in the lack of support for fund raising efforts for the chapter. Afterall, we're trying our best to encourage members to get with our Roger's Park project. We still need to raise a minimum of $20,000.00 and it's becoming a slow process. Please help us by contributing something.
