SEPTEMBER GENERAL MEETING (Meeting Was Held Last Week)— A WILD & CRAZY SMITH RIVER SHOW! IT WAS A GREAT PROGRAM!

ImageLast week's program was a great success. We had a fairly large turn-out and Mark did a great job describing his trip on the Smith River. He also indicated that Joe Sowerby's Montana Fly Fishing Connection would be offering our club a special deal on a self-guided trip next spring (camp crew furnished by Joe)! Look for more details early next spring from us.

Memorial Gifts…. a thoughtful way to affirm the values and priorities of a life!

Some time back I agreed to write about memorial gifts that have been or could be donated to Boulder Flycasters. Over the last several years we've had a few of these gifts. Generally, I get a phone call asking if the chapter would like to sell or distribute equipment or accept a check in the name of individual who passed away.

First of all, such gifts are greatly appreciated and funds received directly or through the sale of these items are specifically directed towards areas specified by the donor. The options are:
1. Youth Programs.
2. Educational Initiatives.
3. Conservation Projects (can be a specific project).
4. Chapter Publications.
5. Chapter Programs.
6. Determination by the Board.

The next question is would the donor like to see some form of acknowledgement such as a write up in our newsletter. If the gift has an ongoing life, the acknowledgement might take the form of an annual award.

Last, what can the chapter and/or the Board do, if anything, to help.

This is not a pleasant topic but you need to know that our organization can help. Memorial gifts are a wonderful way to acknowledge the devotion a loved one had to the sport of fly fishing and the conservation ethics that surround it.

Fall River Clean-up

Image
We will be having our Annual Fall Boulder Creek Clean-up this September 15th. As usual, we'll provide the lunch, you provide the labor. We'll be meeting at 9:00 am at Boulder Flycasters Memorial Park (just past The Red Lion Inn Restaruant and the tunnel). Clean-up will be both in the creek and along the highway. We also furnish trash bags, but you'll need to bring gloves, waders and sturdy boots. We should be through by lunch time and you'll have plenty of time to make the tailgate party for the late evening CU Buff Game.

Note: We have had only a few sign-up as of this notice. We normally have a good turn-out from the club as it's one of our main work projects we ask our members to help with each year. Please sign up for this worthy project right away, remember it's for just a few hours and will help our fishery so very much!

For more information or to sign up, e-mail me at bdbush@comcast.net or call me at 303.443.8966. Thanks, Bob Bush

A Healthy Green River by Tony Fernandez

Seems like you don't hear much about the Green lately, but I can tell you it's as popular as ever! We spent five consecutive weekdays drifting the "A" section the last week of April and were amazed at the crowds. Granted, late April and early May have proven to be very popular due to the excellent midge fishing on the upper stretch and the (usually) prolific BWO hatch further down the river.

It took us a few days to figure out that the heavy numbers were mostly due to the fact that just about every guide boat was launching within a short timeframe. Start before 8:15 AM or after about 9:15 AM and you could avoid the heavy traffic. Even if you did get stuck in the launch frenzy, a mile down the river and you'd have your space back.

STORM DRAIN MARKING PROGRAM

The Club would like to promote the Storm Drain Marking Program to our members. The board has been volunteering to mark storm drains for the city of Boulder over the past two years and we thought you might like to help in this worthy effort. In the hope many of our members will be interested in this fun and helpful volunteer effort. We'd like you to contact, Steve Noud, city lead for this program. He can be reached by phone at 303-413-7386.

The program is really simple. Collect the stickers from Steve (as shown above)! He'll also give you adhesive to secure the stickers with. Be sure to tell Steve, you'd like to adhere the stickers in your neighborhood otherwise he'll assign you a section of Boulder that needs them placed. You can do as many or as few as you'd like. You'll be placing them on the concrete pad just above the Storm Drain. Steve will provide you with a map of your neighborhood with drains clearly marked to hand back in so that they know which drains you've completed! A no-brainer and you'll be helping everyone in your area keep the drains clean!

Storm Drain Marking program information is located on the City of Boulders web site at

NOTICE: We'll be holding Board Elections In November

That's right, we'll be holding Board Election this November. For those of you interested in becoming a board member, there will be three board positions opening up this fall. We are losing three key board members who have been doing an outstanding job for us!

We thank them for all they've given BFC and hope that they will find time to stay in touch and hopefully, can help us out again in the near future. Al Permut and Mike Malac (membership chair) will not be running for re-election this fall and Adam Armold (conservation chair) will be moving out-of-state very soon.

The commitment is small, one evening a month and a chance to help out both the Club and also, all the things that Boulder Flycasters stands for. We've been working hard as a chapter to help keep our local waters clean and clear, keeping the water flowing (always a hard job in an arid landscape) and to be a good steward to our environment!

Why not join us in that effort by becoming a BFC board member? Contact any of the board members listed on our web site at www.boulderflycasters.org or by calling Paul Prentiss: 303.444.0270 or Bob Bush: 303.443.8966 today!
