June 6th Annual Picnic . . . Remember last year . . . great food and great fun!
The Boulder Flycasters will be hosting the annual Picnic with some of KT Barbecue's great food with all the trimmings (No, I don't mean turkey trimmings!). Pop and bottled water provided, all other beverages are "BYO". As a part of our connecting with our membership, we like to suggest having an open mic dialogue, talking about some great local places to fish during June's high runoff.
The fact is, we've been preparing for some fine fly fishing this spring, only to be disappointed by the high runoff in our local waters. We've been sitting on our hands "trying to figure a place to go that doesn't remind us of our morning coffee". Maybe we can get a few of our members who understand this problem to share a few secret spots they hit at this time of year that are worth fishing! I've been holed up at my desks for so long that I've become brain dead and can't remember the difference between 2x and 6x tippet! Don't you feel sorry for me??
Come share early spring's obligatory . . . tall tales with us in fly fishing fellowship! Better yet, bring the whole family, we'd love to see them!
What more can we offer, well . . . How about winning a new fly line compliments of Front Range Anglers as a door prize, and additionally, we'll have a couple of certified casting experts to help us shake the rust off so bring your rods . . . one more thing, we'll be holding a BFC Clothing sale - 50% - 70% off some great "BFC gear".
All this will be happening at the Elks Club Park, just north of the Elks Club Building, 3975 28th Street (west of Sunrise Assisted Living Center, off North 28th Street). We have been holding our Picnics there for the past three years. Starts at 6:00 pm.

| Adam Armold, Conservation Editor . . . Emerging Life
At last, winter has relented and it seems as if everyone is out and about. From early morning runs and evening walks, to bike rides and barbeques, we are enjoying the warmth of extended daylight again.
It’s also the beginning of a new social season and many of us are naturally interested in looking our best. After shaking off the doldrums of a particularly nasty winter, it is natural that we harbor thoughts of lightening up. Although the shelves of our favorite bookstores are filled with volumes of the latest guaranteed weight loss diets, it is no secret that consumption and weight go hand in hand.

One Last Chance - Five more spots available for our fall BFC trip to the Clarks Fork River near Missoula
That's Right! We have five spots available for our trip to a beautiful lodge overlooking the Clarks Fork River. We have room for 10 anglers and we have only five anglers so far! The price is about $50.00 per day, if full! The dates are arriving October 14th and departing on the 17th.
This trip is all on your own. You can schedule guides or fish on your own. Make it exactly what you want. Paul Prentiss and I will be there to assist you but won't be guiding you. There are any number of great waters to fish and you're limited only by your imagination. The Bitterroot, Rock Creek, the Blackfoot, the Big Hole, the Beaverhead are but a few of the waters close by!
Don't past up a chance like this. Granted, it's a crap shoot as to the weather, but we're assured that we'll get all deposits back if we cannot fly into Missoula. Yes, you must find your own way to Missoula. There are a number of airlines servicing Missoula and it's about a 10-12 hour drive there, allowing you to take more gear or your drift boat!
Deposits are due by May 15th so act right away for this bargain!

| John Dowd to lead high lakes angling adventures for BFC'ers. All Trips are filling up fast!! Call John today!!

BFC member John Dowd invites others to join him this summer on day-hikes for some fabulous fly fishing in high lakes and streams in Rocky Mountain National Park and in the Indian Peaks Wilderness. Given the distance and/or elevation gains involved, reasonable conditioning is required for several of these hikes. Also needed for some is a backpack with a capacity of about 3,500 cubic inches to carry wading and fishing gear along with water, lunch and the “10 Essentials.*” These trips are C&R, barbless, and, because the waters are small, will be limited to about 4-rods. For details and to reserve a spot, call John Dowd at 303-442-2477

| Long Time Colorado Trout Unlimited Volunteer, Leo Gomolchak, Passed Away Last Week!
(Picture showing Leo, right, signing a water quality memorandum with State of Colorado, Soil Conservation Board member, Mike Entz in 1990)
Long time trout advocate extraordinaire, Leo Gomolchak, passed away Friday night, May 18th, succumbing after a lengthy battle with cancer. Leo was affectionately known as the "bulldog" because of the fierceness and tenacity that he brought to his advocacy on behalf of trout resources. He was a driving force behind wild trout management and protective regulations, as well as a catalyst for many restoration projects including work on recovering the greenback cutthroat trout. Just this year, CTU established the "Gomo Grant" program to provide seed money grants for chapter projects, as a way of continuing Leo's legacy of grassroots conservation.
Leo's memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, May 25th, at St Paul's Methodist Church, 2111 Carlton Ave, Colorado Springs, CO.
I had the honor and privilege of working with Leo at the CTU offices during the 80's and 90's helping Leo, and other CTU greats, through many a crisis including the Two Forks fiasco.
Leo's true "Bulldog" antics are still fresh in my memory and he was a tireless supporter of all that TU stands for. I will personally miss him and I know a part of CTU's heart and soul have gone with his passing. Leo has been lost to us but will never be forgotten!!

Fly of the Month . . . Pale Morning Dun - Extended Body

Hook: Tiemco 2488 - Size 14
Thread: Yellow 8/0
Body: Yellow 8/0 Thread
Tail: Midge Diamond Braid - Cream
Thorax: Poly wing overwrapped with yellow thread
Wing: Dun Poly Yarn and Yellow Grizzly Hackle
Tying Instructions:
1. Wrap yellow thread from hook's eye to bend of hook.
2. Tie in Diamond Braid at bend, tail should be trimmed so it is slightly longer than the hook length and straight back from the hook shank.
3. Wrap yellow thread forward to the middle of the hook.
4. Cut length of Poly Yarn and wrap under the hook. Wrap yellow thread on top of hook and around yarn forming a post.
5. Tie in yellow grizzly hackle wrapping the thread around the hackle at least 4 wraps up the post and around the yarn, forming a post

7. Wrap the poly bulge under the hook until the color is all yellow.
8. Whip finish head and use curved scissors to shape Poly Wing.

This is definitely a fly to use when the hatch is on. Cast to rising fish as a Dun or when it gets mangled, a cripple. When the hatch is over change flies to maybe a spinner of the PMD.
