Bob
Krumm Presents ZEN NYMPH FISHING OR "ZYMPHING"
Please join Bob as he takes you to a new level in nymphing.
Famous for his guiding services on the Bighorn River, using
his specialty nymphing techniques, he'll start you on a new
set of rules (hummmmmm) with his Zymphing!!
Year after year I observe anglers nymph fishing the deep
runs and holes of the Bighorn River and for the most part,
doing quite well. Still, the competition for the choice spots
on the river can be intense while the majority of the river
goes unused.
During the summer time anglers can find some excellent fishing
in the shallow riffles and flats. An angler can either fish
these sites from his or her boat or pontoon boat or wade
fish much like dry fly fishing.
The Zen part comes from the intuition and knowledge that
an experienced fly fisher can develop. Those subtle little
riffles, that slight declivity in a foot of water, a small
log, a softball-sized rock can give a trout just enough cover
and protection to enable the fish to meet all its needs.
Being able to predict which riffles, declivities, rocks,
and logs is part intuition, part observation, part experience,
and part faith.
Having the right equipment and flies also enters into the
overall equation.
Come and discover the art of zymphing and how you can improve
your fishing success.
Do yourself a favor and come hear Bob as he describes how
Zen can help us will the fish onto our flies. I can't promise
success, but I can guarantee lots of fun thinking about it!

| President's
Pool ~ WE'RE MISSING SOMETHING

The Boulder Flycasters Board of Directors has been struggling
with the issue of membership involvement. We do a good job
of raising money to run the chapter and contribute to various
conservation programs. We've put together exceptional monthly
programs and tried to focus time and resources on local cold
water fishery improvement. We have tried to be attentive
to members needs and have worked hard to provide the best
possible communication via our web site and electronic news
releases. WE NEED YOUR HELP

| "Good
News for TROUT" by Adam Armold, Conservation Editor
Adam
has been following the Colorado Water Quality Control Commission's
meetings on water temperature standards for waters in Colorado.
On January 9th, the Commission had a final hearing on temperature
standards. You all know what warm temperatures do to our
Trout Populations and Colorado Trout Unlimited's teaming
up with National's TU staff helped turn the tide for better
standards for our Trout.

Flycasters Takes Active New Role for Boulder Watershed Stewardship
As
many of you are aware, the City of Boulder is implementing
new water rate polices using aerial photography and other
new techniques to assess home water consumption and irrigation
needs. The main public message from these new rate policies
is water conservation which can be very positive for our
watershed if the savings directly relate to improved in-stream
flows and other key watershed issues. When it comes to politics
however, you need to follow the money to understand motivation
and actions. Very little has been publicized concerning the
direct long-term result from water conservation or the revenue
loss to the city when conservation takes hold and people
use less water. Reductions in water consumption and the new
rate increase plan can create infrastructure budget deficits
long term but in the short run it should create windfall
revenue increases until conservation takes hold. What is
Boulder going to do with these collection windfalls?

| Silver Trout Foundation
Working to Fight Whirling Disease
by
Tony Kay
Steve Lundy Silver Trout Foundation
About 1997, Silver Trout Foundation received a request from
Barry Nehring, desperately trying to manage a research crisis
in the maelstrom created by Whirling Disease. He conceived
a project that could not be totally funded by CDOW, to research
Whirling Disease using Windy Gap reservoir as an outdoor
laboratory. Silver Trout stepped up to the plate, and along
with some other donors helped fund Barry’s initial research
into the cause, effect and relationship between mud, worms
and fish at Windy Gap.

fisherman, food and any adult beverages will be extra. You
provide transportation. It's approx. 12 hour drive from Boulder.

Fly of the Month, Blood Worm - Bead
Head by Ron Donahue
Blood Worm - Bead Head - Recipe
Hook: Tiemco 2488, size 16 - 22
Thread: red thread or red floss
Rib: Gold Wire
Head: Small Bead to match hook size
Tying Instructions:
Step 1: Mount bead on hook.
Step 2: Wrap red thread from bead backward to the bend of the
hook.
Step 3: Tie in wire.
Step 4: Wrap thread to back of bead head.
Step 5: Wrap wire using even, loose spirals, forward to bead
head.
Step 6: Whip finish behind head. Add drop of head cement.
Suggestions on how to fish: Great winter pattern as Blood Midges
are active all winter long.
Fish anywhere that midges are present or prior to Mayfly hatch
as a trailer. Bounce it off the bottom, using a strike indicator.
Small split shot might be necessary to keep it deep. Red color
often reliable in tailwaters. Larger sizes good in lakes. Tie
this pattern in different color for different midge naturals.
