1st General Meeting!
"Barry
Reynolds"
. . . Making Presentation
to BFC Members
I'm sure you all have been waiting for this. Barry's PROGRAM: "Carp
on the Fly". Will be an in-depth look at fly-fishing
for what my very well be the last great frontier in freshwater
fly-fishing. He will take a look at the carps seasonal movements,
feeding patterns, behavioral traits, and how carp function
in all water types including lakes, ponds, and rivers. He
will also discuss fly selection and the best ways to present
them.
Additionally, he will also bring 2 copies of our new DVD
The FlyRodders Guide to Carp for the club to use as raffle
or auction items and will also bring additional copies to
sell to club members at a special price of $20 as opposed
to the normal price of $25.95.
Barry Reynolds Bio: He has authored 4 books including Carp
on the Fly, Pike on the Fly, Beyond Trout, Mastering Pike
on the Fly, and is currently in the middle of his 5th book
on warm water flyfishing to be released in 2007. Barry has
also produced two video/DVDS one flyfishing for pike and
the other on carp. Barry also is currently working on a third
DVD titled “Getting Ripped” that will featured some of the
hardest hitting, highest jumping, most intense in your face
flyfishing action ever caught on film, this DVD should be
released by summer 2007. Barry is also producing and hosting
his own television series that will begin airing on Altitude
Sports this January called The Barry Reynolds FlyFishing
Journal. Barry also serves on the pro-staff for the following
companies, Scott Fly Rods, Ross Reels, Rio Fly Lines, and
is also a contract tier with Umpqua Feather Merchants.
Last but not least I would also like to make sure we pump
Barry's upcoming new television series The Barry Reynolds
FlyFishing Journal to debut on Altitude Sports starting on
Jan 6 2007. Airing on Saturday’s mornings at 9:30am the show
will run for 26 weeks. The show will look at all facets of
flyfishing and include Sailfish in Guatemala, Carp on the
Platte, Tarpon in Belize, World Record Pike in Alaska, Trophy
Lake Trout in Canada, Wipers on the Front Range, and Fall
Browns in the Colorado High Country. This show takes a more
artistic approach and is not another how to show but instead
showcase all that flyfishing has to offer!
by Bob Bush
Also, Our Clinic starting at 6:00 pm at the Spice of Life
Events Center 5706 Arapahoe Avenue.
Barry will be reviewing all his books and you'll have a personal
opportunity to ask questions, one-on-one, about specific
concerns you may have about your own Pike and Carp fly fishing
techniques!

Tyler
Befus-8 year old presenting to "Our Youth" November
10th at Spice of Life Events Center
That's Right Tyler Befus,
son of famous fly fisherman, Brad Befus, will do a presentation
to our youth ths November 10th at A Spice of Life Events Center
(where we hold our regular meetings) 6:30 pm to about 8:00

Bring your children and grandchildren to this special Boulder
Flycasters program. Program begins at 6:30 pm and will end
early enough to get your kids to bed. We'll have some great
door prizes and raffle items suited for youngsters. Hpoefully,
we'll get to see his new book as it is just going to press
as we speak (eat your hearts out all you old BFC'ers, if only
we could be so lucky). This is a program designed for kids
and presented by one himself.
Here's Tyler's Bio: Tyler Befus is 8 years old and has been
fly fishing since he was old enough to go along in a child
backpack. He started fly casting and fly tying at the age of
three and landed his first fly caught trout on his own shortly
before his third birthday. He is the youngest member of the
Ross Reels, St. Croix Rod, Rio Products, Inc. and Whiting Farms

Tying Symposium in Somerset, New Jersey. He has fished the
Rocky Mountain region extensively for trout and warmwater species.
His fishing travels have taken him to Alaska for northern pike
and sheefish as well as Japan for Yamame, Iwanna and Japanese
sea bass. Tyler recently authored his first book “A Kids Guide
to Fly Fishing” and is working on a kids fly fishing instructional
DVD. He currently holds I.G.F.A. Junior World Records for sheefish
and kokanee salmon. His other interests include competing on

Paul
attended the CTU Fall Rendezvous in Gunnison. He secured
some interesting slides from Steve Craig, President of CTU
concerning NTU spending profiles and membership growth.
Considerable discussion surrounded the new CTU Web site and
new components offered on the NTU site.
You might be interested in the fact the CTU has been conducting
a re-chartering process (2006 is the second year). Colorado
Chapters have 4 years to hit an 80% performance rate. BFC
is not hitting this target due to low volunteer hours.
Last, he has included a recent article from Gretchen Bergen
that appeared in the Denver Post at the end of this September, "Fight

a heads-up that we'll be holding our elections for board
positions at our November 1st General Meeting. If you know
of someone who's a Boulder Flycaster and would like to make
a two year commitment to join our board of directors, or
for that matter, a member of Boulder Flycasters who would
like to be considered for a board position, please contact
one of the existing board members. The list of current board
members is found on the BFC web site at boulderflycasters.org.
Please feel free to let us know if you're interested. We'd
love to have you and we're always looking for new points
of view and the commitment is really just a few hours each
month and, as a bonus, we offer free fishing tips if that
appeals to any of you. (For what those tips are worth!!)

Election
Candidates for BFC Board Positions November
1st at Spice of Life Events Center
At our November general meeting
we will be voting on the following candidates for board positions.
They were nominated at the
October general meeting. Here are their bio's. (Note: Bob Bush
and Paul Prentiss are up for re-election and do not have either
their
pictures above or bio's; those can be found on the BFC web
site . . . and besides, we have our pictures in this rag enough
already!! -
But we'd still enjoy your vote!!)
The bio's are in order of pictures above (L to R)
Terry Escamilla . . . I grew up in Texas near the Gulf Coast
where I spent much of my free time fishing for salt water and
warm
water species. I can remember long ago trying to cast small
flies to panfish on a local pond - using my $10 Zebco rod and
reel with
5lb mono. It's likely I was casting farther at that time than
I can now with my fast action fly rods. In 1998 I called up
a friend and
asked for a transfer to Boulder so that I could live in flyfishing
heaven. When I'm not fishing, tying flies, thinking about fishing,
reading
about fishing, or looking at pictures of past trips, I spend
my time working in computer security for IBM. I have a BS in
Psychology,
and MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science. I'm also an Adjunct
Faculty member at CU where they sometimes let me teach.
My interests range widely - from opera to bluegrass, from backpacking
to vacationing in Manhattan, from cryptography to watching
South Park. I have a wonderful wife, Becky, who is an administrator
with BVSD. She likes to fish much less than I, but she
supports my love for fishing. My son Brent is now practicing
law in Denver, and my daughter Meghann a graduate student in
clinical psychology in Portland. My favorite place to fish
is the RMNP backcountry, though I've enjoyed terrific trips
to
Alaska and Canada. I'm passionate about conserving our environment,
protecting our fisheries, and introducing others to flyfishing
so that they can enjoy the sport and help with the challenges
we face.
Here's the obligatory picture of me with fish so you'll know
whom to look for at the BFC meetings.
Tom Finley . . . I have been a fly fisherman for some 30 years
now and I finally decided that it was way past due for me to
give back
something to the sport and pastime I have enjoyed over the
years and to participate in a volunteer organization and worthy
endeavor
bigger than myself. Therefore, I have been an active Boulder
Flycaster TU chapter member now for slightly more than a year
and during
this past year I have been involved as an “apprentice” non-voting
board member. This past year has presented a terrific opportunity
to
witness the inner working, behind-the-scenes aspects of our
chapter and to participate in a wide variety of chapter projects
and functions.
It has been a very personally rewarding and beneficial learning
experience that I want to develop further now as an elected,
voting board member. My board apprenticeship has also produced
many new and valuable friendships and relationships that I
also wish to further pursue and develop.
I am a third generation native Coloradoan and was raised in
the East Denver neighborhood of Park Hill. Following graduation
from East High School, I received undergraduate college degrees
in architectural technology, chemistry, and biology.
I hold a doctorate degree in dental surgery and partially retired
from my dental career in 2002 following 35 years of service
to the
State of Colorado providing dental services at various State
agencies such as University Hospital, Colorado State University,
the University of Colorado, and the Colorado Department of
Corrections.
I have been married to my wonderful wife, best friend, and
life companion now for almost 35 years and live in Lafayette.
Adam Armold . . . I have had a deep love for rivers since I
was a young boy growing up in the Midwest. I would wade and
hike,
exploring their flow through the countryside for hours, until
hunger or approaching darkness beckoned me home.
In 1967 I left the Midwest and moved to the Front Range of
Colorado. My love for nature and her waters grew with each
season
in the Rockies. I first began to fly fish in 1980. Over time,
my pursuit of new waters led me to other states, but I always
returned home to Colorado.
I retired as a governmental contract specialist a few years
ago and now enjoy my love for rivers with a few less distractions.
Whether wading, rowing or paddling, most of my adult life has
been spent actively enjoying my
love for water. The focus of my effort with the Boulder Flycasters
is to assist with the protection of our precious watersheds
that have added so much to the enrichment of my life.

Fly
of the Month, RD Emerger by Ron Donahue
RD Emerger - Recipe
Hook: Mustad 9672, size 16 - 18
Thread: Gray
Tail: Ice Dub - Olive Braid
Abdomen: Ice Dub - Olive Braid
Wing: Web Wing Gray
Thorax: Olive Super Fine
Hackle: Dun tied Parachute
Head: Gray
Tying Instructions:
Step 1: Bend hook 45 dergees at point 1/3 back from eye. This
is meant to hang below surface of water. Don't substute Tiemco
as they usually break during the bending process.
Step 2: Tie in braid at the curve of hook. Wrap one end of
braid forward to the point the hook was bent. Trailing shuck
is about 2/3 length of total hook.
Step 3: Wrap thread to hook eye and back 1/2 way to bend.
Step 4: Tie in wing. Wrap thread 4 or 5 wraps up wing post
and back down to form parachute post.
Step 5: Tie in hackle concave side up.
Step 6: Form distinct thorax with dubbing darker than abdomen.
Give it a drop of floatant.
Step 7: Tie in parachute with 4 or 5 down-wraps.
Step 8: Finish head and trim wing material to shape. Wing slightly
smaller than naturals as this is not a fully mature Dun (Subimago).
Suggestions on how to fish: This pattern is designed to solve
the problem of fish that are taking emerging bugs just below
the surface film or damaged ones in and partly below the surface.
The parachute and thorax float the fly and the body and shuck
hang below, giving the fly better visibility to the trout than
a surface pattern. Best fished at the start of a hatch but
don't be surprised if you get action at the end of a hatch
when fish are feeding on cripples. New flash materials give
improved visibility and durability.

Approved Budget for 2006/2007 by Mark Riley,
Treasurer
At
our last board meeting we voted to approve the budget for
Boulder Flycasters for the 2006/2007 fiscal year.
Here is the Financial Update from Mark Riley, BFC Treasurer
The fiscal year ended September 30th was a good one for BFC.
We netted $17,167 from the auction (about $3,000 more than
the prior year) and moving to an electronic newsletter saved
us $4,000. This savings will be $9,000 on a full year basis.
The bottom line: our net income for the year was $4,843.
You can view our final income statement and statement of
assets
on the bfc web site.
The Board of Directors has approved our fiscal year 2006/2007
budget. We are planning expenses to be $10,815 over income.
This is due almost entirely to a $14,800 budget for our share
of the Middle Boulder Creek restoration project (aka Roger’s
Park).
The total cost of the effort is estimated at about $225,000.
We expect that most of that will be funded by the State.
We will need to make up the difference either with our own
funds or other contributions. We hope to do the latter for
$10,000 of the $14,800 but we felt we should put in our budget
as a worst-case scenario.
You can view our 2006/2007 budget by clicking below. Please
note that despite the $10,815 shortfall our net cash reserves
will total $26,067 at year end.
