December 6th General Meeting!

Image"Annual BFC Holiday Party"

Please come to our Annual Holiday Party at our meeting place . . . "A Spice of Life Events Center". As usual, we'll be munching on goodies provided by the club and spreading lots of holiday cheer. And as we've done for a number of years, bring a gift (fishing related & of low value) to exchange with other club members. It's always fun and great for a laugh or two!!

Also this year, we'll be having Chuck Howard from St. Vrain Anglers, who will give us a short presentation on the new stream walk that their chapter helped construct from Lyons to Longmont along the St. Vrain River. Quite a long river walk and very beautiful, I might add! He's got a number of slides and factual information that we might be able to use for Middle Boulder and South Boulder Creek projects.

Please plan on joining us for all the festivities and delicious snacks!!

President's Pool ~ Youth Night at BFC featuring 9 year old, Tyler Befus

ImageWhen the Board agreed to get behind a special youth night featuring Tyler Befus on a Friday night in November there was some concern about a good turnout. Such fears turned out to be unfounded as 75 members and guests including 25 kids attended this special event. If you didn’t make it, you truly missed a terrific evening.!

New York & Pennsylvania Big Fish on the Cheap by Bill Marx, vagabond editor at large
Growing up in Chicago I had seen great changes in Lake Michigan. As a child I seined minnows at 6:00 am every summer morning with my friend, Ronnie. We sold our larder to waiting fishermen and by 7:00 am, keeping a dozen or so minnows for ourselves, we settled into our spot on Farwell Street pier for a morning of perch fishing. The perch were big and plentiful then. Each day we returned home by noon carrying our seining net, empty minnow buckets, cane poles, small tackle box and a few good fish for an impromptu lunch.

Just a taste of Bill's article about some giant catches on a low budget trip any one of us can take, fishing the tributaries of the Great Lakes. Bill has the answer for us to be successful . . . read on by clicking the link below!

Fly of the Month, CDC Caddis by Ron Donahue

CDC Caddis - Recipe
Hook: Tiemco 101, size 14 - 16
Thread: Brown 6/0
Abdomen: CDC Rope-Brown
Wing: Web Wing Yellow, Mottled
Hackle: Brown
Antennae: Root Beer, midge flash

Tying Instructions:
Step 1: Start thread 1/3 from hook eye and tie backwards to bend of hook.
Step 2: Tie in commercial CDC rope or make CDC dubbing loop. Wrap forward to end of thread wrap which gives the hook 2/3 covering of CDC.
Step 3: Clip a piece of Yellow mottled Web Wing, hook-gap wide and slightly longer than the hook. Taper the tie in end slightly to reduce bulk, wrap forward over the Web Wing to the eye.
Step 4: Take two pieces of Root Beer Midge Flash and tie in forward to simulate antennae.
Step 5: Tie in brown hackle at the 1/3 mark and make hackle wraps forward to 1hook eye distance behind eye.
Step 6: Finish head. Clip wing case to shape and length desired, usually slightly longer than hook. Trim antennae to balance fly, usually 1/2 length of fly..

Suggestions on how to fish:
If you are fishing rough, turbulent water, skip this pattern and choose a Humpy style fly pattern. This pattern is ideal for slow water and lakes. Floats well. Tie it in gray for early amd late season and in brown for all summer Caddis drys. Grease the leader and use power type floatant to revive the CDC.
