BFC Board Meeting MInutes
September 28, 2005
Called To Order by Bob Bush at 6:20 PM. Note: Bob
Bush conducted the meeting due to Lloyd Brady being off fishin’ on
the Big Horn.
Present: Larry Quilling, Al Permut, Mike Malec, Mike
Hickey, Roger Svendsen, Paul Prentiss, Dave Clark, Dirk Larson, and Bob Bush. Note: Gerry
Madigan is overloaded with his class load and will not be attending meetings
for an extended period. Gavin has missed too many meetings and is no
longer considered to be a board member per the By-Laws. Randy Ridinger
wishes to be involved in BFC activities, but wants to be active as a member
first.
Approval of minutes - Unanimous.
Committee Reports:
- Programs - We discussed not having Summer meetings.
Paul moved we suspend monthly meetings in July and August. Board Meetings
would continue. Dave seconded. Unanimous. A discussion
about sending a newsletter for those months was debated. We decided
to continue with a brief newsletter or post card. TBD next Spring. Brad
Befus will be presenting this month with help from his son Tyler.
Paul suggested we hold a program focused on folks that are interested in
fly fishing, but never have. This would be a one day event …. “How
to Fish Day”. It was suggested that local ponds be used where
the new people would likely catch fish. We could hold it on the Spring
free fishing day, however that conflicts with the US Fly Fishing Team trials. Nobody
was made responsible for this proposal. It should be discussed again
at a future meeting.
- Treasurer - No changes. Our spending rate is normal
for this time of year. The raffle brought approx. $60 last month. We
need more raffle materials. Bob still has rods left over from the
auction.
- Projects - We had good success on the creek cleanup: 21
BFCers; many others for a total of 79 - 13 kids. 160 bags were
filled. Food was adequate, but we ran out of tee shirts. We
cleaned from Broadway to Castle Rock. There was a concentration of
trash in Roger’s park. The rock climbing area was also bad. In
preparation for the cleanup, Mike obtained aerial photos of the Creek and
used it to determine beat locations. That was a very successful approach. Because
the photos were a few years old, he obtained them free. Discussion
--- what does it take to get people out? Perhaps outings that appeal
to general public as beginner events. Though the cleanup was a great
success, we only had two more BFCers than last year.
- Newsletter - The October letter was made available at
the meeting. Everything is on track.
- Education - Larry reported that 18 kids from Manhattan
Middle School turned out last weekend. They practiced casting w/o
flies!! They went to So. Bldr. Creek to learn how to sample invertebrates. Kids
enjoyed the morning. Next week, a Wetland Restoration Project will
be held from 8 am till 4 pm. It will be held at St Vrain State Park. The
Fairview High School program starts next week. John will be doing
this as his last year w/several October outings.
- South Boulder Creek - No Report
- Membership - Paul said the breakdown of membership is
about 60% Boulder, 30% Longmont, 10% other. Other detail on demographics
is not available to us. We only have about 5% active members. Other
chapters are much better. This problem continues and continues.
- Fundraising/Marketing/Merchandise - No report
- CU Flyfishing Club - No Report
Old Business:
- Boulder Fish and Game - No Report
- Flyfishing Team Trials Update - A meeting was
held last month. There will be another meeting in October. Lunch
meetings are possible, probably Wednesdays. The team may alternate
with breakfast meetings. Jack will be in town on 10/13 and 10/14. Bob
and Paul will target a Thursday 10/13 w/Jack. Bob and Paul want
a meeting prior to meeting with Jack. They have the ball.
- Fall trip was cancelled due to poor participation. This
was a surprise, since the trip was so good last year.
New Business:
- Dirk - Would like to have a letter written to Bldr. County Open Space
re: gaining permission to do stream restoration. Bob suggested we
get a new project chair first. A previous trip to Roger’s Park
w/Doug Laiho led to mapping out a plan for restoration options and potential. After
documenting that plan in a presentation format, we can approach the appropriate
parties. It was determined that we should contact Doug and move in
that direction. Responsible: ??
- As we are losing a significant number of board members, we need to focus
on obtaining new board members. Paul expressed interest in pulling
those board members remaining together for a meeting prior to the next
board meeting.
- Larry announced there will be a Conservation camp 6/18 thru 6/23/06 on
Ouray Ranch. 16 kids will take part. The camp is being coordinated
by Larry Q. & Sharon Lance. This looks very promising. The
cost will be $200 to $300 per camper.
- TU renewals - Paul is trying to figure out if we can register thru the
chapter. Paul has not had a single reply to many inquiries. TU
National is very unorganized and has been for several years now.
- A motion was made to adjourn at 7:44 PM. Seconded, unanimous.
Respectfully Submitted:
Roger Svendsen
