many - unanimous
Committee Reports:
- Programs –Bob/Paul – Bill Edrington from
Royal Gorge Anglers. The subject is “How to tie and fish the life
cycle of the caddis fly”. This is a different format from usual meetings
and hopefully it will be well received.
- Other events/program suggestions -
- Mike Malec had an informal discussion with DOW and learned that Ken
Kehmeir from DOW has presented programs to chapters around the state.
He is a fish ecologist. Bob will follow-up to see if he is willing. We
did not discuss whether we have a desire to have him present to us.
- Gordon Wickstrom – will facilitate a Nov. 6 event at the Boulder
Library debating “floating vs. sunk flies”. This is a significant
event and has received some national attention.
- Nominations – Planning - Larry Q. is willing to
stay on the board as an “at large” member. Tony F. is interested
in eventually becoming a board member, but not this year. Mark Riley is
willing to serve and will entertain the Treasurer position if elected.
Bill Leutchen is also willing to serve. Al, Larry, Mike, and Dave will
need to be nominated from the floor to continue. Paul will handle the nominations.
- Treasurer – We are over budget by $3700 for the
year. The South Boulder Creek project cost $2500 against this years budget,
but is a FY 2006 project. Income is near plan, except 22 Club revenue which
was $2000 short. Late bills from the 2004 auction were another reason for
the shortfall. The projects budget was underspent. Larry will send a copy
of the budget results to CTU by the deadline. Raffle income was $750 against
a plan of $1000. There has been no merchandise selling this past year.
That effort is planned to only break even in any event. Merchandise should
be discussed at the planning meeting for next year.
- Projects – Mike Malec - Plaque at Memorial Park – Bob
will try to get our plaque installed in the next week or so. Mike received
a birthday card from DOW as recognition for his good works. This is a good
example of volunteer recognition, which is an area we could improve upon.
- Newsletter – Bob asked Matt to write an article
describing the CU Fly Fishing Club and their activities. He agreed.
- Education – Larry finished the Fairview High class.
There are plans to continue activities at Fairview after the current instructor
departs. Larry took about 8 kids fishing with limited success due to low
stream temperatures. Larry is close to getting a program started at Erie
High. The plan is to raise some trout there. There will be expense, one
item being a chiller to hold fish tank temperature to 40 degrees.
- CTU conservation camp in June. Ben Hartman and Bret
Kubrict will attend. The facility is confirmed. The overall program is
on track. Shawn Bratt is spending six months in Thailand on a work assignment
and won’t be able to assist Larry on this effort.
- South Boulder Creek – Larry - Work on So. Bldr.
Creek is progressing well. No additional help is required from us.
- Membership – Paul has still had no response from
TU regarding rebates from our dues submission. We currently have 840 members.
We have 340 solid email addresses. We seem to be gaining new members, but
losing old, keeping the total reasonably stable. Paul will inquire with
Dave Nickum at CTU to see if he understands the rebate process. Mike asked
if there is any reason at present in passing our personal renewals thru
the BFC membership chair. The answer is that we really don’t know.
- Fundraising/Marketing/Merchandise – Dave – The
federal government has a Combined Federal Campaign which lists TU as an
option for donors. Dave will inquire if BFC can be added next year. The
previous information regarding TU getting a percentage of money spent at
King Soopers for groceries is false. This is only valid for City Market.
- CU Flyfishing Club – The club has six or seven
fishing kits which may be missing some components. Larry can supply any
missing components if needed. Matt said it is not necessary at this time.
Ron Donahue is willing to provide some fly tying instruction.
Old Business:
- Boulder Fish and Game – No Report again. Paul
was very sorry!!!
- “Fishing clinics for folks new to fly fishing” will
be started. It will be coordinated by Paul. Danny Smith from Front Range
Anglers will play an active role. This is a good topic for our planning
meeting. Some discussion centered around concern that the local fly shops
will not like our hosting these events. The conclusion was that introducing
people to fly fishing will be good for the shops, overall, and will not
be a problem.
- Flyfishing Team Trials Update – Paul - The third
meeting of the steering committee will meet tomorrow morning. The project
is divided into about 9 focus areas. A schedule will be created soon. Paul
will provide a web site as a source of information for interested BFC members
and others. Everything looks promising at this stage. River locations are
being discussed, which is a complex issue. There is some concern about
fostering competition in fly fishing, but it is felt that this will not
become a volatile issue. Bob pointed out that winners receive medals. There
is no monetary reward and the competition is not meant to be a commercial
activity. The objective is to do a first class job of hosting this event
and make it an annual Colorado event.
- By-Law changes & Bonding – We will need to
change the By-Laws to remove the need for bonding due to the very high
cost of becoming bonded. We should also consider moving the election from
the November meeting to October. This is another planning meeting topic.
- Mud Snails – Don Dominico is continuing to pursue
closing the creek in the infected area. Don would like to have a letter
from us supporting stream closure. The Bldr City Manager needs to be convinced.
Only the creek will be fenced. The pond will remain open. Mike Malec talked
to DOW in an informal session. He was told that DOW feels that fishermen
spread the snails, so why should DOW try to eliminate them….that
the problem does not have a satisfactory solution. Fall is the time the
DOW field biologists will find the snails due to electro-shocking activity.
Al moved that BFC provide a letter supporting fencing the infected area
of Boulder Creek. Seconded by Larry. Unanimous in favor. The letter will
be circulated to the board via email before release.
New Business:
- Passing the torch.
- BFC is required to file an annual report with the state. Mike Malec
will investigate.
- Lloyd and Bob Bernard are the gaming managers currently. We need replacements.
Quarterly reports are also required.
- Moved to adjourn at 7:45 by Al. Seconded and passed!!
