BFC Board Meeting Minutes
August 31, 2005
Approval of minutes: Moved by Lloyd; 2nd by Paul
Attendees: Larry Quilling, Al Permut, Matt Costello, Randy
?, Mike Malec, Gerry Madigan, Lloyd Brady, Mike Hickey, Roger Svendsen, Paul
Prentiss, Dave Clark
Location: Al Permut’s Conference Room
Committee Reports:
- Programs – John Taverner from Sandstone Anglers
is coming 9/7. We are hoping for a good turnout. Topic: San Juan. October
is election meeting – some discussion – Mike Malec checked
By-Laws and discovered the election is required in November. We should
consider changing the B.L.’s to have the election called in October.
This year, the elections will be in November. Paul suggested we not have
programs in July and August. Turnout has been small and costs are fixed
/ high. Newsletter is also questionable, however Mike M. said the Newsletter
is the only way we can get volunteers for projects. Further discussion
is required.
- Treasurer – Larry reported that the only Summer
expenses were the Newsletter. There was a discussion of finance audit,
financial review. Al P. will drive another review. Per the B.L.’s
a review committee is required to report results within 3 months from end
of the physical year which is 9/30. Al and his committee will complete
this review by year end. We need to remove the Bonding of Board Members
requirement from the By-Laws since it was found to be far too expensive.
- Projects – Statewide cleanup is 9/24. We have
10 folks signed up thus far. The Camera will put in 2 free ads. We have
not promoted the clean-up yet. We had 36 people last year. Food was discussed.
We will try to get food from the same sources as last year, or will buy
some items. Dirk Larson is investigating opening an open space area in
Gilpin County near Rollinsville. It may not be a good idea. Follow-up is
required at our next meeting with Dirk present. Stream sampling – City
wants more extensive testing monthly – Curry Rosato. Previous testing
has been done by high school kids. No interest was shown by the board.
We have not found a volunteer. Larry Q. will see if it will work into his
Fairview efforts.
- Newsletter – Dave will order labels from Paul
next week. The August Newsletter went out without problems.
- Education – John Schneider will hold his class
again. He will need a replacement next year due to his move to Oregon.
Erie High School is also looking into offering a Trout in the Classroom
series. Plans are to do various water studies. Also a Manhattan Middle
School project is beginning. There is a 4 hr. effort being done on 9/24,
which conflicts with the stream clean-up. Larry is also working to get
a Conservation Club program started with 16 kids sponsored by various TU
Chapters. Larry continues to talk to all the High Schools, but there is
no interest in other Boulder schools. Outdoor programs have been cancelled
by all Boulder schools except Fairview.
- South Boulder Creek – South Bldr. Canyon Dam
will be removed in September and modified for fish passage. Larry proposed
to contribute funds to start McGin ( sp?) ditch removal, which would encourage
spawning. Removal takes $70 to $100K. Seed money of $1000 is suggested.
Formal action did not occur, so we will need to discuss at another meeting.
- Membership – Dues can go through our chapter
again and chapters will get a cut. Paul will call the new CTU president
to clarify and be sure … Greg or Sharon Lance. We still are having
trouble with people paying their dues and not being credited ….
showing up on TU role. The National TU system has been broken for several
years now.
- Fundraising/Marketing/Merchandise – Pactolus
Day was poorly attended. There were about six folks there. We broke even
moneywise.
- CU Flyfishing Club – Matt Costello wants to set
up a volunteer event twice per year. The 9/24 clean-up will be their first
event. Their first meeting will be 9/1. The club is already trying to get
donations for the 2006 auction. The club meets once per week. The club
wants a fly tying instructor for mid-October thru early December. We will
try to help. Several names were given to Matt.
Old Business:
- NZMS What to do now? Stream will be re-opened in September
we believe. Harry Crocket is Randy VanBuren’s replacement and is
not in favor of opening up Boulder Creek. Pete Walker, DOW guru, has not
found any new outbreaks. We had a discussion about how to decontaminate
fishing gear. A 50/50 solution of 409 and water for five minutes is reported
to be very effective. All the major wader and boot manufacturers have said
this treatmen will void their warranties. Therefore freezing is probably
the safest technique. We probably need a true scientist to do the research
and find out what the snails do to the environment. Lloyd suggested signage
on infected areas as well as a message in the Newsletter. Lloyd asked Mike
Malec to write a column to inform the members of current status. Nobody
volunteered to put up signage or work with the city.
- Boulder Fish and Game – No Report
- Flyfishing Team Trials Update – Jack Dennis’s
schedule has made scheduling a local meeting difficult. Jack will come
to Colorado on 9/7 to meet @ the Spice of Life with interested parties.
The Board of BFC is invited. The time is 2 PM to 4 PM. BFC, CTU and other
state contacts are showing great interest. It will be an informal discussion.
Paul hopes to identify specific individuals that want to be involved including
sponsors. The trials are the week after Memorial Day. We will need a ton
of volunteers.
New Business:
- Review of Board Members and November Elections – Al’s term
ends but he is willing to continue, Lloyd’s term ends and will not
continue, but will still serve on current committees, Gavin is a question
since he has missed a ton of Board meetings, Bob Bernard has resigned due
to his relocation to Oregon; Mike Malec’s term ends but will do another
term if elected, Larry’s term ends and wishes not to continue. Dave
continues. Therefore we need four new members. Randy will fill one of them.
The Board was asked to approach members that might be interested is serving
on the Board.
- Fall trip is 9/16, 17, on the Arkansas. There is a good article in Newsletter.
Also, Clear Creek Lodge is closing at the end of September. Greg at Arc
Anglers is willing to put together a trip if there is interest. Al will
get info to Paul and Paul will put out an email blast to those on the BFC
email list.
- Al moved to adjourn at 8:12 PM. Seconded, unanimous.
Respectfully Submitted,
Roger Svendsen
